In Chesterfield, firefighters battled a massive blaze at a vacant home on Greenleaf Valley Drive late Wednesday afternoon. The fire, which began on the back deck, sent thick black smoke visible for miles and even showed up on weather radar. Crews from multiple agencies responded with over 20 fire trucks, facing major challenges from icy conditions, a steep frozen driveway, and equipment freezing on contact. Despite the difficulties, the fire was mostly under control by Wednesday night, though efforts continue to shut off a gas line buried under the collapsed home. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In Jefferson City, the Missouri House has passed House Bill 495, which would return control of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to a state-appointed board—a system similar to one in place for over a century until voters shifted authority to the city in 2013. Sponsored by Rep. Brad Christ of St. Louis County, the bill now moves to the Senate for consideration. If approved, a five-member board, including the mayor and four gubernatorial appointees, would assume control in August. St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones criticized the move, calling it political overreach that disregards the will of voters who supported local control.

They’re encouraging support for HB 567, sponsored by Representative Sherri Gallick of Belton, which aims to provide clarity and protect businesses from these added burdens.
