A 21-year-old Fenton man was fatally shot by St. Charles police early Sunday morning after fleeing a traffic stop and crashing near the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa. Around 3 a.m., officers attempted to pull over the man’s Lincoln sedan, but ended the pursuit due to the violation being traffic-related. About 15 minutes later, the vehicle was involved in a crash at South 5th Street and Ameristar Boulevard, causing another car to overturn. The man fled on foot but was found shortly after and shot by officers. A handgun was recovered at the scene, though police did not say whether it was aimed at them. The four officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave as the incident is investigated.

During the week of May 5–12, the O’Fallon Police Department responded to 1,050 incidents, booked 52 subjects, and handled 40 traffic crashes. Notable calls included the arrest of a driver reported for erratic behavior on Highway 79, the removal of a homeless man trespassing in a vacant apartment, and reports of individuals with a rifle and a BB gun, though no suspects were found. In a separate case, eight truck computer control units (CCUs) were stolen; K9 officers helped recover six of them and other evidence in a wooded area.

At the May 8 O’Fallon City Council meeting, a bill was introduced seeking approval for general plans to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Tom Ginnever Avenue and North Cool Springs Road. If approved, the bill would authorize city staff to begin acquiring land rights needed for the project, which aims to improve traffic flow, reduce emissions, and enhance pedestrian safety through the addition of a high-visibility crosswalk.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has requested a federal emergency declaration following a series of EF-3 and EF-1 tornadoes that struck the St. Louis and southeast Missouri regions last Friday, causing widespread destruction. The storms killed seven people and damaged or destroyed thousands of properties. If approved, the declaration would authorize up to $5 million in federal aid for public safety, health, and debris removal, without delaying the pursuit of a broader federal major disaster declaration. Federal assistance would also support homeowners, renters, and local governments through reimbursements and housing aid. Damage assessment teams will begin surveys this week in seven counties and the City of St. Louis to determine eligibility for further aid.
