St. Charles city leaders are considering a plan that would heavily restrict new short-term rentals orSTRs, effectively capping them at the current number of around 48. While the existing moratorium on new STRs would end, the proposed bill would limit any new rentals to the Main Street area, also known as the Historic Preservation District, while grandfathering in existing rentals elsewhere. The plan maintains a 500-foot buffer between STRs to address residents’ concerns about neighborhood stability and housing affordability. City officials believe this strikes a balance between tourism and community integrity, though some STR owners feel the restrictions are too extreme. No public opposition or support was voiced at the council meeting.

Authorities continue to investigate while urging vigilance in the community.
