Some 500 workers at the Lear Corporation’s facility in Wentzville are on strike today, walking off the job to protest the company’s handling of employees’ health and safety concerns.
The strike started Sunday and has halted production at the GM assembly plant since Monday.
Lear makes the seats that go into GM vehicles.
Bill Hugeback, President of the UAW’s Local 282, says workers at the plant have developed severe back pain, knee pain, as well as carpal tunnel syndrome thanks to the repetitive nature of their work on the assembly line.
In a statement, Lear says they’ve “negotiated in good faith with the UAW for some time to reach a new collective bargaining agreement” and that they “remain committed to reaching an agreement that will benefit all parties.”
The strike has shut down production at GM’s Wentzville Plant, which employees over 4,000 people in the community.
GM is urging both sides to resolve their differences quickly.
